FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DEUTSCHE WELLE (DW) ACQUIRES TAP DOCU-SERIES

NAIROBI, KENYA - JUNE 30TH, 2020 - The African Perspective Magazine (TAP) today announced the acquisition of their first documentary series, the Returnees/Homecoming by the German Media powerhouse Deutsche Welle (DW). After the confirmation of this global distribution acquisition, DW is set to premier shortened versions of the series on their station for their international audience and throughout their multi media platforms.

The returnees docu-series captures the stories of eight young, brave and enterprising African Women from Ghana, Kenya, Sudan, Somaliland and Rwanda who, given the option to stay in the west and build a life that many on the continent can only imagine, chose to return back to Africa and start over despite everything they were told and knew about the continent and their home countries.

Within six months, the TAP Magazine team traveled to meet these ambitious and driven women to find out what made them leave their comfort in the west. They talk about their past lives: their education, their expectations, their aspirations both for themselves and their countries, the realities of living in the diaspora as an African as well as the challenges of settling back given the time they’ve spent away. Each story gives a sample of the fiery spirit of entrepreneurship that resides on the continent and especially in the 1.1 billion African Millennial's that live here. With every story, a clearer picture of Africa’s opportunities and possibilities is painted through the eyes of those who looked to the west but still said ‘Home is Best’.

Speaking about the series, Ras Mutabaruka who is the producer lauded DW for the partnership and thanked the eight featured women saying “My team and I are forever grateful to the cast for allowing us into their lives and for trusting us with telling their stories. We take this honor and responsibility very seriously. I’d also like to thank Eiman Kheir, Head of Diaspora division at the African Union, whose interview in TAP Magazine Issue thirteen inspired this series”.

He also added that while DW will broadcast shortened versions of the series, TAP Magazine will resume worldwide screenings of the full length episodes once it is safe again to do soo. Thus far, the series have screened in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto Canada.

The series was shot by Ignacio Hennigs, edited by Enock Oyoo and Ivanovitch Ingabire and Paul Kidero served as the assistant producer and still photographer. said Mr. Mutabaruka when talking about all those who made this idea a reality.

You can watch the first episode here. Don’t forget to look out for the rest of the episodes and for the entire screening of The Returnees in a city near you in the future.
